- Make sure your home is puppy proofed. Remove any small items, such as toys, jewelry, or food, that the puppy may be tempted to chew on. Keep all wires out of reach and cover up any exposed electrical outlets to prevent shocks.
- Provide a comfortable bed for the puppy. Choose a bed with a soft surface that offers plenty of cushioning. Place the bed in a quiet spot that is away from any foot traffic.
- Create a schedule for potty time. Take the puppy outside regularly, every 30 minutes to 1 hour, and designate a potty spot in the yard.
- Stock up on necessary supplies. Buy food and treats that are formulated for puppies, along with a collar and leash, a brush, and other supplies that you may need.
- Establish a routine. Establish feeding, potty, and playtime routines that the puppy can become familiar with. Begin crate training as soon as possible and make sure to provide plenty of positive reinforcement when the puppy does something correctly.
